CESARE VECELLIO "Nobile veneziana" - "Nobled Venetian"

Cugino e collaboratore del più famoso Tiziano, a Venezia pubblica nel 1590 il libro “Degli habiti antichi et moderni di diverse parti del mondo”; 500 xilografie di costumi europei, d'Asia e d'Africa, di particolare interesse per la storia della moda italiana e per le precise informazioni che l'autore unisce a ogni tavola. Questa immagine è di nobile veneziana ornata, che così il Vecellio commenta: -”Donna nobile ornata, et honesta venetiana antica... era habito delle Gentildonne nobili, quando si ornavano per comparire à feste e devotioni publiche. Portavano sopra la testa un cerchio d'oro in forma di corona con lavoro fatto per mezo la fronte in esso cerchio a guisa di medaglia tonda... Si legavano poi su la testa un manto assai largo, il quale per la sua larghezza faceva un gonfio di bella vista, et era di seta ricamata a stellette d'oro, et lungo fino in terra, attorno del quale similmente era attraversata una lista d'oro, et era sostenuto dal braccio sinistro, attorno del quale avvolgevano un capo di esso manto, et il resto lasciando pender sopra la spalla destra fino in terra...”- Resta un mistero come Vecellio riuscì ad ottenere un numero così grande di informazioni dettagliate sugli abiti antichi e del suo tempo, di tutto il mondo! Un'opera colossale che ispirò molti altri scrittori di moda nei secoli che seguirono.

This image is of noble Venetian ornamented, which Vecellio thus comments: -"Ornate noble woman, and honest ancient Venetian... was a noble Gentlewomen's dress, when they were ornamented to appear at parties and public devotions. They wore a crown of gold in the shape of a crown with work done in the middle of the forehead in a circle in the shape of a round medal... They then tied a very large mantle on the head, which for its width was of good sight, and it was of silk embroidered with gold stars, and long to the ground, around which likewise a list of gold was crossed, and was supported by the left arm, around which wrapped a head of this mantle, and the rest left to hang over the right shoulder to the ground "- It remains a mystery how Vecellio managed to obtain such a large number of detailed information on ancient clothes of his time all over the world! A colossal work that inspired many other fashion writers in the centuries that followed.
