SAN MICHELE - SAINT MICHAEL

Questo capolettera miniato in fondo oro, databile fine del XIII° secolo, proveniente da una pagina di salterio o antifonario, da me reperito nel 2016, si riferisce all’antica iconografia dell’arcangelo San Michele, il comandante dell’esercito degli angeli di Dio, nella rarissima e primordiale rappresentazione bizantina, senza ali da angelo e senza la spada di fuoco, ma con abiti da dignitario di corte, la mano destra alzata in segno di giuramento e nella mano sinistra la bilancia per la psicostasia, la pesa delle anime durante il Giudizio Universale. E’ un mistero l’evoluzione nei secoli in arcangelo e conseguentemente Santo di questa figura fortemente venerata in tutto il mondo con antiche, importanti ed imponenti cattedrali, chiese e monasteri. San Michele viene solitamente raffigurato con Satana, sconfitto, sotto i suoi piedi. La particolarità più misteriosa della miniatura è che, probabilmente essendo l’amanuense di origini bizantine, il demonio sotto i piedi del Santo viene rappresentato in forma di grottesca, con la fisionomia di un… Moro musulmano, considerato il demonio dell’epoca, con tanto di orecchini tondi e viso scuro, ben visibile da chi indossa la cravatta perché raffigurato al contrario.

This gold-colored illuminated drop-cap, dating from the end of the 13th century, taken from a page of psaltery or antiphonary, that I have found in 2016, refers to the ancient iconography of the archangel Saint Michael, the commander of the army of the angels of God, in the very rare and primordial Byzantine representation, without angel's wings and without the sword of fire, but with court dignitary clothes, the right hand raised in oath and in the left hand the balance for the psychostasis, the weight of the souls during the Universal Judgment. The evolution over the centuries in archangel and consequently Saint of this figure strongly venerated throughout the world with ancient, important and imposing cathedrals, churches and monasteries is a mystery. Saint Michael is usually depicted with Satan, defeated, under his feet. The most mysterious peculiarity of the miniature is that, probably being the amanuensis of Byzantine origins, the devil under the feet of the Saint is represented in the form of a grotesque, with the physiognomy of a ... Muslim Moor, considered the demon of the time, with so much of round earrings and dark face, clearly visible to the wearer of the tie because it is shown in reverse.
