GUIDO RENI

L'immagine è tratta dall'acquaforte realizzata nel 1598 da un giovanissimo Guido Reni (22 anni), la prima incisione conosciuta del grande maestro bolognese. Lo stampatore Vittorio Benacci, commissionò al Reni, 8 tavole (da inserire in quello che viene considerato il più bel libro di feste, bolognese del '500) raffiguranti la costruzione delle nuove e maestose porte di Bologna sotto le quali doveva passare il corteo ecclesiale di Papa Clemente VIII (nato Ippolito Aldobrandini), per onorare la presenza del pontefice che si era annesso il ducato di Ferrara e si era riconciliato (assolvendolo dall’eresia protestante) con il re francese Enrico IV di Borbone di Navarra convertitosi al cattolicesimo. Il Papa arrivò a Bologna, ma le porte non furono mai realizzate, infatti le tavole vennero commissionate quando il corteo papale da mesi, aveva già lasciato la città. Rimane un mistero la mancata costruzione delle stesse.

The image is taken from the etching made in 1598 by a very young Guido Reni (22 years old), the first known engraving of the Bolognese great old master. The printer Vittorio Benacci, commissioned to Reni, 8 drawings (to be included in what is considered the most beautiful Bolognese party book of the 16th century) depicting the construction of the new and majestic arches of Bologna under which the ecclesial procession of Pope Clemente VIII (born Ippolito Aldobrandini) had to pass, to honor the presence of the pontiff who had annexed the duchy of Ferrara and was reconciled (absolving him from the Protestant heresy) with the French king Henry IV of Bourbon of Navarre, converted to Catholicism. The Pope arrived in Bologna, but the doors were never built, in fact the etchings were commissioned when the papal procession, had already left the city for months. The failure to construct them remains a mystery.
