ALBRECHT DURER

Questa rara xilografia datata 1511 è una delle stampe più misteriose del maestro di Norimberga. E' l'unica realizzata in un quarto di formato e non proviene da serie o gruppi di incisioni, nè da tematiche similari; forse realizzata per illustrare i suoi poemi "Von der bosen Welt" ("Sul mondo malvagio") e mai utilizzata. La raffigurazione è nota come "Caino che uccide Abele" anche se non c'è modo di sapere se la scena è tratta dalla Bibbia, potrebbe semplicemente trattarsi di una scena di omicidio. Forse la figura dell'assassino rappresenta l'artista, con la collocazione del suo monogramma dietro la scure in una firma realizzata in modo unico e mai più ripetuta. La scena rappresenta un uomo inginocchiato sopra un altro uomo costretto a rimanere a terra. L'ascia impugnata dalla figura sovrastante con la folta barba, è pronta a dare il "colpo di grazia" al fianco dell'uomo sottostante, un colpo che non dà scampo. L'uomo che giace a terra guarda direttamente negli occhi del suo assalitore, la bocca è aperta in un urlo di terrore e panico nel vedere l'odio profondo nel gesto del suo assassino. Mai Dürer ha descritto la violenza in questo modo; l'odio, il terrore, la brutalità del gesto, poche volte sono state così bene descritte nell'opera incisoria.

This rare woodcut dated 1511 is one of the most mysterious prints by the master of Nuremberg. It is the only one made in a quarter of format and does not come from series or groups of engravings, nor from similar themes; perhaps made to illustrate his poems "Von der bosen Welt" ("On the Evil World") and never used. The depiction is known as "Cain who kills Abel" although there is no way of knowing if the scene is taken from the Bible, it could simply be a murder scene. Perhaps the figure of the murderer represents the artist, with the placement of his monogram behind the ax in a signature made in a unique and never repeated way. The scene represents a man kneeling on top of another man forced to stay on the ground. The ax held by the figure above with a thick beard, is ready to give the "coup de grace" alongside the underlying man, a blow that gives no chance. The man lying on the ground, looks directly into the eyes of his assailant, his mouth is open in a scream of terror and panic in seeing him hate him profoundly in the gesture of his murderer. Never Dürer described violence in this way; hatred, the terror, the brutality of the gesture, few times they have been so well described in the story of engraving.
